South Tottenham blooms as TfL In Bloom competition celebrates 25 years

Stations and depots across London have been brightened with gardens, fruit and flowers as part of Transport for London’s annual TfL In Bloom competition. The contest, which began in 1910, asks staff to create green spaces in unlikely corners of the network.
This year’s event carried added significance, marking 25 years since TfL was established. To celebrate the silver jubilee, a new Best Theme category was introduced. Highbury & Islington station took the prize, working with local children to showcase elements of the network’s history through its garden design.

The top accolade, Best in Show, went to South Tottenham station, which also secured Best Cultivated Garden. Judges described its planting as “a riot of colour”, praising the station for building on its success in last year’s event.
Other winners included Goodge Street station, recognised in the Environment category for using recycled planters and solar power, and Morden Underground station, which took home the Fruits and Vegetables award after impressing judges with exotic produce including pineapples.
Tower Millennium Pier collected the Best Newcomer award, with judges highlighting the difficulty of creating a thriving garden in such a windy, exposed location.
Community partnerships were also celebrated. Stratford Market depot, Hammersmith Grove service control centre, and Norwood Junction station shared the Best Community Partnership award. Norwood Junction was praised for bringing back a previously dormant garden, transformed with local support into a peaceful space with benefits for mental health.
More than 50 entries were submitted across 12 categories, underlining the long-standing commitment of staff to improve the atmosphere for passengers and colleagues alike.
