Stansted Airport train cancellations after signalling fault and lounge fire

Stansted Airport train cancellations caused major disruption on Wednesday morning after a signalling fault halted services into the terminal, while a small fire in the Escape Lounge delayed access to security. Travellers were urged to check their journeys and flight status as operations restarted with hold-ups still likely.

National Rail confirmed that lines have reopened, but services may still be delayed, revised or cancelled as the timetable recovers. CrossCountry and Greater Anglia said knock-on disruption was affecting routes linking Birmingham New Street, Cambridge, the airport and London Liverpool Street.

The airport reported that the lounge incident at about 03:30 created significant smoke, prompting a temporary closure of part of the terminal and a pause on entry to security. “The departure lounge is now open and passengers are being processed through security, though waiting times may be longer than usual,” a spokesperson said. No injuries were reported.

By the morning peak, passengers faced long queues and scattered delays to departures, with rail and road issues compounding the impact. Drivers also encountered slow traffic on the M11 and M25.

If you are travelling today, check live rail updates and speak to station staff for alternatives. Replacement buses and ticket acceptance are in place while services stabilise.
