S1 LM sells for record $20.6 million
Gordon Murray Special Vehicles has announced that the S1 LM has sold for $20,630,000 million (£15,772,773.78 million) at an auction in Las Vegas, making it the most expensive new car ever sold at auction. The car is part of an “ultra-exclusive” run of just five and the firm behind it says it “sets a new benchmark” for its record-breaking sale.
The S1 LM arrived in “dramatic” form via a helicopter to “set the tone for an unforgettable evening” at amfAR charity’s Gala Dinner in the famous American city, in partnership with the Las Vegas Formula 1 Grand Prix. Flying into the event suspended by a helicopter, the extremely-rare and exclusive car descended into the Wynn Las Vegas venue “in a theatrical display befitting its status” as the “Special One.”
The auction saw “fierce bidding” between collectors present and remote bidders worldwide, resulting in the record-breaking hammer price that is unlikely to be broken soon.
The S1 LM is named the “Special One” and nods Gordon Murray’s other legendary creation, the McLaren F1, especially the LM variant of which only five were built.
The new car has styling which pays tribute to the original, with power coming from a bespoke 4.3-litre V12 making 720 PS at 12,100 rpm. A newly optimised six-speed manual gearbox and “race-inspired, road-perfected” suspension, help bring that power to the road. All of it is wrapped in an all-new body made from ultra-lightweight carbon fibre panels with a naked polish carbon fibre interior featuring unique “unique artistic detailing.”
The lucky buyer will now be able to create their own personal specification with Murray himself, shaping every detail of their S1 LM. They will also embark on development drives with four-time IndyCar champion and three-time Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti, providing their feedback on the car.
