Nordic nations to contribute towards weapons for Ukraine

Three Nordic nations will jointly contribute $500 million towards a new NATO initiative aiming to deliver US-made weapons to Ukraine. Defence ministers of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden made the announcements on 5th August.

The funding will be channelled through the NATO Support Procurement Agency (NSPA), that hopes to enable fast-tracking of the purchase of American arms to Kyiv. The weapons will be sourced directly from the American market.

“This is an important initiative from NATO and the U.S. It helps ensure that Ukraine quickly receives crucial military equipment to defend themselves, and it strengthens cooperation between the United States and European countries in their support of Ukraine,” Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store said.

Denmark will contribute around 580 million Danish kroner (£67 million), Sweden is pledging $275 million (£206 million), and Norway will deliver around $135 million (£101 million), official statements from the Nordic nations have revealed.

The support comes under NATO’s Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) mechanism. The Netherlands funded the first PURL package, contributing 500 million euros.

“Speed is absolutely critical. That is why we have decided to allocate funds to the initiative immediately,” Danish Defence minister Troels Lund Poulsen said. “If at a later time there is a need for additional funding from the Ukrainian side, we are willing to consider that as well.”

“Grateful to Denmark, Norway & Sweden for fast action to fund a package of US military support for Ukraine,” NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte wrote on X. “This will deliver life-saving equipment & critical supplies to the front-line, strengthening Ukraine’s hand & helping them deter aggression as they pursue lasting peace.”

US President Donald Trump announced a new scheme in July that would allow European countries to finance American-made weapons to Ukraine. The agreement opens the door for Ukraine to gain additional air defence systems, including missiles and ammunition over the coming months in its ongoing war with Russia.
