Mitsubishi planning UK comeback in 2026
Mitsubishi Motors has confirmed its return to the UK market in 2026, five years after it ended the sale of new cars here. The Japanese car maker, one of the country’s biggest, is best known for its iconic rally car, the Lancer Evolution, as well as a recent slew of plug-in-hybrid SUVs, the Outlander and Eclipse Cross.
The comeback will see Mitsubishi Motors form an alliance with Renault and fellow Japanese brand Nissan, with its new line up being based on products from these companies. This will include a Clio-based Colt supermini and Captur-based ASX SUV both of which are already on sale and proving popular elsewhere in Europe, according to Auto Express. The Outlander nameplate will also return, likely to be based on the underpinnings of the Nissan X-Trail.
There are also a number of future models planned, including EVs, to be based on the Renault Scenic and new Nissan Leaf. The former will retain the Eclipse Cross branding, a controversial choice as the original Eclipse was a two-door sports coupe popular among tuners in America and made famous by the Fast and Furious movies.
Historically, Mitsubishi had been known for many rugged off-road models such as the L200 pickup truck and Shogun 4×4. Whether these will be making a comeback has not been confirmed.
The company says it has that it already has over 100 sites to handle its aftersales work in the UK and dedicated dealers will arrive in the summer of 2026.
