Minerals deal signed between Greenland and Europe

Greenland has signed a minerals deal, allowing a Danish-French consortium to mine on the island. The permit, granted to Greenland Anorthosite Mining (GAM) allows it to extract anorthosite, key in the production of aluminium. This follows interest from US President Donald Trump who hopes to acquire the Danish territory.

GAM was granted a 30-year permit as part of the deal, according to Reuters.

Jesper Willaing Zeuthen, associate professor at Aalborg University in Denmark, said that Trump’s interest in Greenland is likely in the hopes of securing long-term investment objects, something that is difficult to do under current Greenland law.

Trump’s interest has put Greenland into the spotlight with the American President hoping to seize the Arctic island, rich in oil, natural gas, and minerals.

The island’s Mineral Resources Minister, Naaja Nathanielsen, said that American interest has not resulted in any investment, adding that the deal signals business dialogue with European partners is progressing more rapidly.

The minerals deal grants GAM permission to extract anorthosite, a white rock comprised mainly of aluminium, micro silica, and calcium. It plans to ship the minerals from the west of the island for use in the fibreglass industry.
