Met Police Freemasons: force launches consultation on officer declarations

Officers in the Metropolitan Police may soon have to declare if they are Freemasons, as the force opens a consultation on adding Freemasonry to its list of declarable associations. The move follows concerns about how undisclosed memberships could affect investigations, promotions, or misconduct processes. Met Police Freemasons declarations would not amount to a ban, but would formalise transparency inside the UK’s largest force.

The consultation sets out how a declaration system could work and where it would sit alongside existing rules on associations that may present conflicts of interest. Senior officers say the aim is to improve confidence inside the organisation and among Londoners. Met Police Freemasons disclosure would be recorded in line with professional standards used for other sensitive associations.

The push echoes a recommendation made after the murder of Daniel Morgan in 1987, where an independent panel noted recurring suspicion around undisclosed memberships during past inquiries.
