Maduro deploys Venezuelan amid increase in US presence

President of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro announced the deployment of 4.5 million troops throughout the country, declaring that “no empire will touch the sacred soil of Venezuela,” after Washington doubled the reward for any information leading to his arrest. The US has also increased its military presence around Latin America and the Caribbean.
Last week, the American government told CNN that it has ordered naval movements in the area, hoping to contain the threat posed by drug trafficking groups. According to Reuters, three US Navy destroyers and around 4,000 military personnel would arrive at the edge of Venezuela’s territorial waters within 36 hours.
Earlier this week, an official from the US Department of Defense said that there are currently no American ships in the region, not have any been given orders to travel there.
“This week I am going to activate a special plan to guarantee coverage with more than 4.5 million militiamen throughout the national territory. Militias prepared, activated, and armed,” Maduro said at a televised meeting with Venezuela’s governors and mayors.
He described the “extravagant, bizarre and outlandish” threats from America, calling them “rotten rehashes.”
“We defend our seas, our skies, and our lands. We liberated them. We guard and patrol them. No empire will touch the sacred soil of Venezuela, nor should it touch the sacred soil of South America,” he said in the speech.
