London’s Air Ambulance marks one year with new helicopters

London’s Air Ambulance is marking the first anniversary of its two Airbus H135 helicopters, bought after a £16 million fundraising drive.
The aircraft were introduced to increase the charity’s ability to respond across the capital. Faster than their predecessors, they also carry more fuel and are designed to land more easily in built-up areas. The service has already trialled new procedures with them, including the first UK airborne intervention for cardiac arrest patients through the Endovascular Cardiac Arrest Team (ECAT).

Captain Sam Tompkins, chief pilot, said:
“These aircraft are the single most effective way to bring our clinical teams to where they are most needed – at the side of a Londoner on the worst day of their life. They bring practical benefits, equipping our teams to handle the challenges of tomorrow.”
Dr Anna Dobbie, clinical lead, praised the public for their role in making the upgrade possible:
“None of this would have been possible without the support of the people of the city we share. The people of London came together for us when we needed them most and everyone at London’s Air Ambulance Charity is so grateful for their backing.”
She added that while only a year has passed, the ambition is to keep evolving the service to meet the needs of a growing city.
Further details about the charity’s work and projects can be found via the London’s Air Ambulance Charity website.
