Liveability Index sees Copenhagen overtake Vienna

Copenhagen has taken the top spot in the Global Liveability Index 2025, ending the three-year dominance of Vienna. The Danish capital was given a perfect score of 100 for stability, education, and infrastructure, climbing up from second to be the planet’s most comfortable city to live in.
The EIU index looks at 173 cities globally, assessing 30 indicators categorised into stability, healthcare, culture, environment, education, and infrastructure. The average score this year is 76.1 out of 100, the same as last year. However, this reflects a continuing decline in global stability, largely as a result of geopolitical conflict and civil unrest.

Western European cities, as well as those in developed Asia continue appear high in the rankings. Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide all appeared in the top ten, while cities in Japan, New Zealand, and Canada also ranked highly…
Western European cities however also were the cities that fell the most in the rankings. Every UK city, London, Manchester, and Edinburgh, moved down in the rankings. This is as a result of widespread riots and a rise in homelessness. Two cities in Canada, Calgary and Tornoto, also fell due to a lower healthcare score. North American cities however still do well with all 21 appearing in the top tier for liveability.
Across the board, healthcare, education, and infrastructure all saw marginal improvements on average. The most significant gains were seen in the Middle East and North Africa, largely thanks to improvements in healthcare and education in cities in the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
