Linford Christie sports centre receives £1.3 million investment

Linford Christie sports centre will benefit from a £1.3million investment towards new “state-of-the-art tennis, netball and football pitches” among other new improvements. The centre in Wormwood Scrubs received significant support from both the Wormwood Scrubs Charitable Trust and Kensington Dragons FC.

The fitness centre now has two seven-as-side pitches, three tennis or netball courts, and improved floodlighting, as well as new all-weather pitches. The work included demolishing and replacing the rundown old changing rooms.

The new facilities join Linford Christie Outdoor Sports Centre’s recently built and council funded community room. Also on site is a seven-a-side 3G pitch and a seven-a-side sand-based pitch. Both can be split into two five-a-side pitches.

The refurbished facilities at Linford Christie will benefit local side Dragons FC, which has a lease on the main eleven-a-side pitch, as well as local primary-age pupils who also make use of its facilities. Clauses in the Dragons FC lease for the Linford Christie Stadium ensure that community involvement is encouraged and promoted.

The stadium, north of Du Cane Road in White City, will be able to host more school competitions and disabled sports events, as well as free summer school sessions. Local people can benefit from free training sessions. The deal means that hire rates for the pitch are affordable, the council said.
