Labubu movie in the works
Chinese you firm Pop Mart and Sony Pictures have announced that Labubu dolls will be the stars of a feature film. The movie, which will combine live-action and computer-generated animation, is in “early development,” according to the two companies.
Paul King will be the director. His portfolio includes Wonka, Paddington, and The Mighty Boosh series on the BBC. A release date has not been confirmed at the time of writing. The movie was announced in Paris on Wednesday 18th March 2026 at a global exhibition for the tenth anniversary of the toys.
Labubu dolls have become extremely popular, with its sales making Pop Mart worth almost $40 billion (£29.9 billion), according to the BBC, and more than more well known toy companies such as Mattel. The success of the toy has allowed the company to expand further than the toy industry, including a theme park in Beijing.
The Labubu is its most popular product, with part of the appeal being the blind boxes where a buyer does not know which one they have bought until they open the package.
Created over ten years ago by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, the toy is said to be a forest elf inspired by Norse mythology and part of a series of books by Lung, The Monsters, which includes other mythical characters.
Lung will be the movie’s executive producer, while King will develop the script with Steven Levenson, who’s previous works include stage show, Dear Evan Hansen, and musical, Tick, Tick…Boom!
