Kumano, Wakayama to host exclusive rocket launch

Fancy a journey through time and space with an exclusive three-day tour in the sacred land of Kumano, Wakayama? This extraordinary package combines the history and culture of the region with the cutting-edge science of space exploration, offering guests an up-close view of a rocket launch, complemented by luxury accommodation and exceptional cuisine.

The adventure starts with a spiritual ceremony at the UNESCO World Heritage site of Fudarakusan-ji Temple. Here, guests will participate in a special prayer for the success of the rocket launch, view the rare Eleven-Faced Kannon statue, and witness a Goma fire ceremony, connecting the energies of the earth, Kumano’s sacred landscape, and the vastness of outer space. After, guests will return to their luxurious accommodations for a restful night ahead of the next day’s events.

On Day 2, guests will travel to Kushimoto Town, home to Spaceport Kii, Japan’s first private rocket launch site. The site, located in a remote area far from populated regions, offers an exclusive opportunity to witness the launch of the Kairos Rocket from multiple vantage points. Guests will have three viewing options: from the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route, from a private chartered cruise, or from the tranquil setting of a hot spring bath at Koubouyu. The day concludes with a BBQ and a launch replay viewing party at Ichimaiiwa, where video footage is projected onto a cliff face.

On the final day, guests can get hands-on with rocket science, building and launching their own model rockets using the same mechanisms as the real thing.

The tour is available in three distinct packages—Fire, Water, and Onsen—and is set to run from 13th – 15th December, 2024. Each package offers a distinct experience, from Michelin-starred dining to stays in exclusive luxury accommodations. Prices start at ¥500,000 per person, with bookings accepted until 15th November.

This once-in-a-lifetime experience combines modern space exploration with the ancient traditions of Kumano, offering an unforgettable way to explore the history, culture, and natural beauty of Wakayama.
