“I am delighted to be appointed the next Provost,” she said. “Gresham College has a long and distinguished history of providing the highest quality education to lifelong learners, which I deeply value. I look forward to working with the Executive Director, the College Council and all my new colleagues to continue this exceptional tradition.”
Richard Smith, Executive Director, said the appointment followed a highly competitive search. “We were seeking an exceptional candidate with the academic reputation and leadership to build on more than four centuries of Gresham College while developing new ideas. Professor Shaw will guide our academic offering so we can continue to host high-quality free lectures in the heart of the City of London.”
Shaw leaves her roles as Principal of Harris Manchester College and Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Oxford at the end of September. She will continue as Professor of the History of Religion at the university. Her earlier posts include Dean for Religious Life and Professor of Religious Studies at Stanford University, Dean of Grace Cathedral in San Francisco, and Dean of Divinity and Fellow of New College, Oxford. She studied at Oxford, Harvard and Berkeley, and is the author of several books, most recently the co-authored Gen Z, Explained.
Gresham typically delivers around 100 public lectures each year, with up to 9,000 people attending in person and more than seven million views online. Further background on the programme is available via the college’s official site.
