Gurugram in India sees hours-long traffic jam

Thousands of commuters in Gurugram, near Delhi, found themselves stuck in a traffic jam for between six and eight hours after rain caused gridlock. The commuters were travelling one of the wealthiest areas in India, known for its futuristic skyscrapers and sprawling corporate offices. Many expressed their outrage online, questioning how such an area could have such poor infrastructure.
Authorities in the area, located on the outskirts of Delhi, have advised offices, schools, and colleges to all work from home as more rainfall is predicted. Torrential rain caused havoc in many parts of India with hundreds of people losing their lives in floods and landslides.
People expressed their frustration on social media, describing the traffic jam in Gurugram as “nightmarish,” being over 10km (6.2 miles) along one road, according to local media reports. One video that went viral showed a seemingly endless row of cars clogging up at least a dozen lanes of the highway.
“Gurugram is drowning. You pay exorbitant rent to come home to this,” according to a user on X. Some joked about whether they should sleep in the office while others said that they would get to their destinations quicker on foot.
Gurugram is in the state of Haryana. Residents aired their frustrations, questioning how the state has not been able to improve the city’s infrastructure. It houses the regional headquarters of a number of large companies, including Google, Meta, American Express, and Samsung.
