Grit giveaway in Richmond to help in future cold snaps
Richmond is once again running a grit giveaway to help residents with the next cold snaps, offering free rock salt to keep the borough’s pavements clear. This is on top of its existing winter gritting service.
The latest grit giveaway will be running later this month. Local residents can collect up to 25kg of rock salt from the Langhorn Drive depot in Twickenham between 9am and 3pm on Thursday 29th and Friday 30th January. Residents will have to bring a photo ID and proof of address and sign in at the gate reception.
Between 5th and 10th January, the borough’s fleet of four gritters carried out 11 precautionary gritting runs as they spread over 12 tonnes of grit every day. The four precautionary routes covered around 120 miles, equating to 240 miles of gritted highway, helping to “ensure that main routes remained safe and accessible for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians,” the council says.
As well as the primary routes, secondary roads and isolated areas were gritted three times over the recent cold snap. Pedestrian safety was prioritised, Richmond says, with primary footways in town centres, near railway stations, and around schools being gritted daily whenever icy patches were identified.
Earlier this month, 150 additional bags of rock salt from the depot were distributed to residents on top of the November grit giveaway. 855 bags have been handed out, equating to 21,375kg of rock salt.
