Fighter jets: Spain to opt for Euro over US

Spain has revealed that it would no longer consider the option of buying the American F-35 fighter jets, opting instead to go for either the European-made Eurofighter and Future Combat Air System FCAS), according to a spokesperson from its defence ministry. This confirms an earlier report from newspaper El Pais that Madrid has changed its mind about Lockheed Martin manufactured jet.
“Foreign military sales are government-to-government transactions, and this matter is best addressed by the U.S. or Spanish government,” Lockheed Martin said in response to questions about the move.
Madrid has instead set aside €6.25 billion (£5.46 billion) in its budget for 2023 to buy new fighter jets, according to El Pais. But Madrid’s plan to spend most of the additional €10.5 billion for defence this year in Europe made it impossible, according to the newspaper, to get its hands on the American-made plans.
Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish Prime Minister, announced plans earlier this year to increase defence spending in order to meet the NATO target of 2% of GDP in 2025. He has refused however to raise spending to 5% in the long term despite pressure from the US on NATO allies to do so. This was met with criticism from Donald Trump who threatened to impose further tariffs on Spanish goods.
