The town of Dorset is being considered for a new university that specialises in dentistry. This is part of the seaside town’s regeneration, the BBC reports.
Dorset Council says its cabinet is looking to work with partners on a range of ideas that are aimed at turning it into a “thriving coastal destination,” adding that a new Allied Health Professional University, was one of the proposals under consideration. Funding has already been allocated for a dental facility.
The plans for the university are being developed in a partnership with Health Sciences Uinversity (HSU) and local NHS partners aimed at keeping talent within Dorset.
“These proposals are all about creating a Weymouth where businesses thrive, families flourish, and visitors fall in love with our stunning coastline and vibrant community,” Councillor Richard Biggs, Cabinet, member for property and assets and economic growth, said.
Other projects under consideration would include a new hotel-led development on the Weymouth Peninsula and a development of new homes and commercial spaces at North Quay and Weymouth Bowl. Developments to the Rectory on St Thomas Street, turning it into a cultural hub, are also being considered.
The plans will go to a public consultation that expects to start in the Spring of 2026, according to the council.
