Wiltshire Police said a 15-year-old boy was arrested nearby in connection with the incident and remains in custody while inquiries continue.

Detective Inspector Darren Ambrose described the incident as a tragedy for all involved. “This is a tragedy which has resulted in a young man losing his life,” he said. “We understand the concern this will cause in the local community, and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”

He added that officers were continuing to piece together what happened and urged anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. “It is vitally important that we hear from anyone with information about this incident or anyone who saw what took place.”

A police spokesman confirmed that the boy’s next of kin had been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

The killing has unsettled a town better known for its historic centre and close-knit community. London Road, where the attack took place, was cordoned off for several hours as forensic teams worked at the scene and officers spoke to residents and businesses.

Local people described disbelief that such violence could occur in the area. Several said the speed with which events unfolded made the incident all the more difficult to comprehend.

Police have asked anyone with information, dashcam footage, or mobile phone recordings from the area at the time to contact them as soon as possible. Guidance on how to report information anonymously is available via Crimestoppers.
