Bus strikes in February to affect south-east London routes
350 drivers in north-east London will take part in bus strikes for four days in February over an ongoing dispute over alleged “bullying and union busting” in a bus depot. Trade union Unite has alleged that since a change in management at the Lea Interchange Bus Garage in Leyton, its members were put through “aggressive behaviour.”
The union members at the depot, part of Stagecoach, will strike on 6, 7, 20, 21 February.
Stagecoach says it “refutes Unite’s allegations of union victimisation or bullying,” recognising “the important role of our recognised trade union.” The union alleges that a member was unfairly dismissed before being reinstated, while another was suspended on “trumped up charges.”
“Unite will never stand by and allow reps to be bullied and workers at the Lea Interchange Bus Company have our full support throughout this dispute,” Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said.
The upcoming bus strikes follow four strike days in December and January.
“We would not tolerate victimisation of union representatives for carrying out their duties,” Stagecoach London said. “Any disciplinary matters are handled through long-established, trade-union-agreed procedures that apply equally to all employees and include the right to representation and appeal.”
The bus strikes will affect the following routes: 58, 86, 97, 135, 236, 276, 308, 339, 488, D8, W13, W14 and 678. It will also affect the 97 which serves the Westfield Stratford City shopping centre and the 276 to Newham Hospital.
