Budget airlines rarely offer advertised cabin bag fares
Which? has criticised that European budget airlines in Europe hardly ever offer cabin bag fares as cheaply as advertised. The consumer watchdog has found that the lowest price for a carry-on bag among major European budget airlines Ryanair, EasyJet, and Wizz Air, are rarely ever available.
In a recent survey of almost 1,500 bag prices on eight routes from the three airlines, Which? found that the lowest carry-on prices of £5.99 were only available one percent of the time. The report took into account flights in four separate times of the year, August, November, December, and February, accounting for both peak and off-peak flights.
The charges exceeded the flight fares in some cases, it found, especially for some low-cost routes in Europe which these budget airlines advertise as some of their cheapest flights. For budget conscious travellers, these routes are among the main attractions.
Other larger and airlines, British Airways, KLM, and Qatar Airways all provide cabin bags for free, charging only for checked-in luggage.
The Spanish Consumer Rights Ministry fined five budget airlines €179 million for “abusive practices” over luggage, though the EU Commission has questioned the nation’s authority to issue such fines. The European Parliament’s transport committee has also called for cabin bags to be free on all airlines.
