Brussels Airport disrupted by suspected drone sightings
Flights were disrupted at airports in Belgium, with none departing or arriving at Brussels Airport, due to suspected drone sightings. Air traffic was suspended at 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT) after the suspected drone. It reopened an hour later before closing again soon after.
Liege Airport had also been affected. It was not clear when flights would continue, with local media reporting drone sightings at the Kleine-Brogel and Florennes military airbases. This follows from other suspected drone sightings around airports, with similar incidents causing disruption in Germany, Denmark, and Norway.
“There are currently no departing or arriving flights at Brussels Airport due to drone sightings around the airport,” Brussels Airport said on its website on Tuesday 4th November when the sighting took place. “This disruption has led to delays and some flight cancellations and might still impact flight operations on Wednesday morning,” it said in a later update.
Pictures from inside showed what looked like camp beds being prepared for passengers, suggesting longer delays. Officials at the capital’s second-largest airport, Charleroi, said that air traffic was briefly halted as a precautionary measure.
Flights were initially diverted to Liege before it too closed as a result of suspected drone sightings, local media reported. Flights had been diverted to other nearby airports in Borth Belgium and the Netherlands, it added.
This marked the fourth consecutive night that authorities in Belgium reported drones over a major military base close to its border with the Netherlands. An investigation had begun, with the country’s defence minister, Theo Francken saying on Monday that there was “a clear mission targeting Kleine Broge.”
