The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League saw six fully driverless cars, delivering a “defining moment for autonomous technology.” The cars “pushed the limits of AI performance” in a world-first Grand Final at Yas Marina Circuit. The night was marked by “record speed, bold overtakes, and split-second AI decision making.
The German TUM “cemented its dominance” by retaining the championship title, followed by the UAE’s TII Racing in second, and Italian PoliMove in third. With eleven international teams competing for a $2.25 million prize and a Human vs AI showdown with Former F1 star Daniil Kvyat, the event showed how much the race and technology has progressed since the first season.
From the moment the race kicked off, polesitters TUM were under pressure from Unimore (Italy), showing their own record-setting pace to catch up and overtake them for the lead. Over the next ten laps, the pair continued to battle it out at speeds of over 250 km/5 (155mph), with less than a second between them throughout.
Halfway into the race, the two were within half a second of each other, meeting the back of the pack. Attempting the overtake on sixth place Constructor from Germany, Unimore collied with another car mid-corner, sending both vehicles off the track and giving TUM back its lead.
The Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League also hosted a STEM competition, with over 140 students from the UAE participating. “It aims to inspire and enable the next generation of autonomy and AI specialists, equipping them with new skills and experience,” the league said.
Over 8,000 people attended the second season of the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, filling the North Grandstand.
