Appeal from WHO for people in emergencies & crisis settings
The World Health Organization (WHO) has launched its 2026 global appeal to “ensure that millions of people living in humanitarian crises and conflicts can access health care.” In 2025, the organisation and its partners supported 30 million people, thanks to its annual emergency appeal.
The resources, it says, helped deliver life-saving vaccination to 5.3 million children, enabled 53 million health consultations, supported over 8,000 health facilities, and facilitated the deployment of 1,370 mobile clinics.
Its 2026 appeal is looking for nearly $1 billion to respond to 36 global emergencies, including 14 ‘Grade 3’ emergencies which “require the highest level of organisational response.” These include “sudden-onset and protracted humanitarian crises where health needs are critical,” the WHO said.
“This appeal is a call to stand with people living through conflict, displacement and disaster, to give them not just services, but the confidence that the world has not turned its back on them,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “It is not charity. It is a strategic investment in health and security. In fact, access to health care restores dignity, stabilizes communities and offers a pathway toward recovery.”
This, the WHO says, “comes at a time of converging global pressures.” Protracted conflicts, the “escalating impacts” of climate change, and recurring infectious disease outbreaks are “driving increasing demand for health emergency support, while global humanitarian financing continues to contract.”
Last year, humanitarian funding fell below 2016 levels, leaving the WHO and its partners to reach just a third of the 81 million people initially targeted for humanitarian health assistance.
“Renewed commitments and solidarity are urgently needed to protect and support the people living in the most fragile and vulnerable settings,” the organisation said.
