A40 Westway to be partly closed for works from 20 March

TfL will carry out “essential safety-critical renewal work” to the A40 Westway between the A40 Westway Roundabout and the Marylebone flyover between 20th March and late April. The work will close part of the road, with diversions put in place.

One of the busiest strategic routes on the capital’s road network, it sees up to 96,000 vehicles every day. To keep it and the surrounding area “running safely and reliably,” TfL says the “works and associated road closures have been planned to minimise disruption as much as possible.” The works have been planned to ensure the closures fall during the Easter period where traffic is slightly lower, and are scheduled to avoid other major roadworks “as far as possible.”

Parts of the structure have “reached the end of their service life,” TfL says, and it along with its partners have bene carrying out renewal works to ensure that those using the road will “have safe and reliable journeys for decades to come.” The next phase involves replacing two joints on the Marylebone Flyover A40 Westway, allowing the flyover to safely expand and contract with temperature changes and vehicle movement.

The “complex and specialist” work will need a full carriageway closure until it is completed.

“Though every effort will be made to reduce disruption, TfL recognises the closure will have a significant impact on road users,” it said. “A comprehensive traffic signal strategy will be put in place to keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible during the closure, which will be continually reviewed as part of the ongoing management of the road network.” 33 bus routes will also be affected.

TfL advises those who use the road to “plan ahead and use alternative methods of travel.”
