SUV charge for London considered by Mayor
London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan is considering the introduction of a charge for SUV drivers in the capital. This comes after research from TfL said that the vehicles posed “intensifying risks across London.” City Hall figures indicate that an SUV is more likely to kill a pedestrian than a similar car in a collision.
The proposal forms part of the Mayor’s Vision Zero plan and his strategy to towards no deaths or serious injuries on the capital’s roads by 2041.
In two decades, London saw a tenfold increase in the number of SUVs from around 80,000 in 2002, to 800,000 in 2023, campaign group Clean Cities has said.
“Large SUVs are physically reshaping urban streets, with half of new cars now too wide for minimum specified parking spaces,” Analysis in the Vision Zero plan says. “They take up more road space, leaving less for people cycling and motorcycling, and block sight lines needed to cross or use the road safely. Their bulk makes junctions, crossings and residential streets more hazardous for everybody outside the vehicle. “Without action to address oversized and heavier vehicles, more people will be seriously injured or killed.”
The plan would lay out 43 actions that aim to reduce the risk of death or serious injury on London’s roads. This includes the use of AI to detect dangerous driver, more 20mph speed limits, and the installation of 1,000 new pedestrian crossing.
