Gresham College announces new professors and fresh lecture themes
As Gresham College prepares for its next academic year, three distinguished voices are stepping up to lead its public lecture programme, continuing a tradition that stretches back over 400 years in the City of London. Known for offering free access to high-level thinking, the College has just announced that Daniel Susskind, Helen Czerski, and Matt Jones will be delivering new public lectures in London from autumn 2025.
The series, which is free to attend in person or watch online, is a core feature of Gresham’s commitment to public education. These talks consistently draw millions of views each year and reflect the college’s enduring belief in the value of sharing knowledge openly.
Daniel Susskind, who will take on the role of Mercers’ School Memorial Professor of Business, brings a sharp focus to the way artificial intelligence is reshaping work and education.
“It’s a real privilege to be part of such an important community,” he said. “We’ll look closely at how we respond to the challenges AI presents.”
Meanwhile, oceanographer and broadcaster Helen Czerski has been named the Frank Jackson Foundation Professor of the Environment. Her lecture theme, Notes from a Large Planet, will explore the systems that sustain life on Earth, from ocean bubbles to atmospheric forces, making the science behind our natural world both accessible and compelling.
Computer scientist Matt Jones completes the trio, taking up the post of IT Livery Company Professor of Information Technology. His lectures, titled AI As Your Overlord: Assimilation, Acceptance or Resistance?, will investigate how rapidly evolving tech is reshaping not only systems but our sense of humanity itself.
All three professors bring with them a track record of innovation and communication. Czerski is also known for co-hosting BBC Radio 4’s Rare Earth, while Jones has long explored the intersection of computing and human behaviour. Each will give six talks throughout the year, building on Gresham’s legacy – one that includes figures such as Sir Christopher Wren and, more recently, Sir Chris Whitty.
To date, Gresham College has reached a growing audience across the UK and beyond with its programme of new public lectures from London. The 2025 line-up is expected to further extend its reach at a time when public discourse around AI, the environment, and future business is more urgent than ever.
You can view the upcoming schedule and access past lectures directly via Gresham College’s official website.
