Wandsworth Wraps Up a Successful ‘Sustainable September’ with Over 60 Community Events

Wandsworth Sustainable September has wrapped up, celebrating the borough’s commitment to eco-friendly practices with over 60 community events aimed at tackling climate change.

Throughout September, Wandsworth Council collaborated with local organisations to create an exciting lineup of events that showcased the borough’s dedication to sustainability. Hundreds of residents participated in activities that ranged from workshops and webinars to festivals and street parties, each one encouraging sustainable practices and a closer connection to nature.

One of the standout events was the Happy Home’s Climate Awareness Workshop at Balham Library, which drew a crowd of 150 eager participants. This interactive workshop highlighted practical ways residents can reduce their carbon footprint at home. Additionally, a Circular Economy Webinar attracted 70 attendees interested in learning how reusing and recycling can benefit the environment. The month also featured the Southfields Harvest Festival, a community-driven event that brought a variety of sustainability activities under one roof, drawing locals from across the area.

The borough’s Car Free Day on 22nd September saw a record-breaking 40 street parties, the most in any London borough. These events gave residents a chance to experience the benefits of car-free living and encouraged a shift toward walking, cycling, and other sustainable modes of transportation. Local schools joined in the sustainability drive, with Hurlingham School students hosting a Costume Library, where they could swap costumes and borrow new ones, reducing waste and promoting a sharing culture. Other events throughout the month included clothes swaps, climate-focused coffee mornings, film screenings, and upcycling workshops, offering something for everyone and reinforcing the message that even small changes can make a big difference.

Councillor Judi Gasser, Cabinet Member for the Environment, praised the community’s enthusiasm:
“Wandsworth is committed to creating a greener future, and this year’s Sustainable September was a testament to our community’s passion and creativity. Many of these changes are not just good for the planet—they can save families money and improve health. It was wonderful to see so many people getting involved.”

The council’s Climate Microgrants scheme also played a vital role, providing over £10,000 to support 25 local sustainability projects this year. One recipient, Laura Goossens of Goose Glitters, used the grant to host Vintage Collage Workshops in Roehampton, teaching participants the art of upcycling while providing a relaxing, creative outlet. Reflecting on the event, she shared, “Being able to offer attendees the tools, materials, time, and space to relax, destress, and learn a new skill was incredibly valuable. I believe people left the workshop feeling seen and heard, empowered, and with a boost of confidence.”

Though Sustainable September has come to an end, Wandsworth’s commitment to sustainability continues. The Wandsworth Sustainability Network will hold its next meeting at Battersea Ironsides Sports Club on 9 October, offering residents an opportunity to learn more about climate change initiatives and connect with others who share a passion for a greener future.
