Wandsworth Students Celebrate A-Level Success Amidst Rising Achievements

Students across Wandsworth are celebrating a successful year of A-Level and BTEC results, with overall performance showing a slight increase across key grade brackets compared to last year. The improvement is not just seen in academic qualifications; students pursuing BTECs and other vocational qualifications also experienced a notable uplift in their results.

Among the standout successes are care experienced students, who achieved an Average Point Score (APS) of 31.1, closely trailing the national APS of 34.3 for all students in 2023. Additionally, 74% of Wandsworth’s students secured grades A*-C, just slightly below the national average of 76%. This is a significant achievement, particularly given the unique challenges faced by these young people.

Cllr Kate Stock, Cabinet Member for Children, expressed her pride in the accomplishments of these students, stating, “We are very proud of the many achievements of our care experienced young people who have been awarded their A-Level and BTEC Level 3 results today. Their journeys are inspiring, and we wish them the very best in their next steps, which includes apprenticeships and acceptances at universities such as Loughborough, Brunel, and Royal Holloway.”

Among the high achievers is Marcus Lau, a former student of Ark Putney Academy, who earned AAA in Maths, Further Maths, and Chemistry. Marcus is now set to study Mathematics at University College London (UCL). Reflecting on his success, Marcus said, “I’m delighted to have achieved these grades. Waiting for results day was so stressful but it was worth it. I would really like to thank my teachers and my friends for the support they have given over the years.”

Another student from Wandsworth, who will be studying medicine at UCL, shared their excitement, stating, “I want to thank the staff who have given me so much. I can now follow my dream to become a doctor.” Similarly, a learner set to study Creative Robotics at his chosen university was overcome with emotion, remarking how his results have opened the door to pursuing his passion.

The success of Wandsworth students extends beyond individual achievements. Bruce Gerry, Deputy Head and Head of Sixth Form at Burntwood School, highlighted the resilience and determination of the students, particularly in light of the challenges they’ve faced over the past few years. “We are so proud of our students,” he said. “Many of our students have secured places at leading universities to study subjects ranging from Medicine, Architecture, Law, Education amongst many others. Our highest performing students have demonstrated the importance of hard work, dedication, and focus.”

At Southfields Academy, Headteacher Wanda Golinska echoed this sentiment, noting the improvement in results across A-Levels and BTEC Nationals. “Our results have again increased this year, across A Levels and BTEC Nationals,” she said. “All our students who applied have been offered their preferred choice of university. A number of students are off to study medicine at UCL and mathematics at Kings London. The Trustees and staff of Southfields Academy are delighted with these outcomes.”

For students who may not have achieved their predicted grades, there is still hope. The UCAS Clearing website is open, offering opportunities for students to secure a place at universities across the country, including spaces at prestigious Russell Group institutions.

Here’s a summary of the A-Level results from key schools in Wandsworth:
