Waitrose recalls lunch pot over salmonella fears

Waitrose recalls their Egg & Spinach protein pot (90 g instant lunch pot) over salmonella fears, with shoppers warned not to eat the product if it has a use‑by date of 31 July or 1 August. Customers are being urged to return the item to their nearest Waitrose store for a full refund.

The supermarket confirmed the move after a Food Standards Agency (FSA) alert, which stated that the product “may cause illness” due to the potential presence of Salmonella. The bacteria can lead to symptoms such as fever, diarrhoea and stomach cramps, which usually appear within hours or days of exposure.

What is Salmonella?

Salmonella is a common bacterial infection that affects the intestinal tract and is usually spread through contaminated food or water.

Common sources include:

  • • Raw meat
  • • Undercooked poultry such as chicken or turkey
  • • Eggs
  • • Unpasteurised milk

Typical symptoms: diarrhoea, fever, stomach cramps. Symptoms usually appear within 6 hours to 6 days and may last up to a week.

Most cases resolve with rest and fluids, but infants, older adults and those with weakened immune systems may need medical care.

This recall highlights how vital it is for shoppers to check labels and keep an eye out for safety alerts. Even a single product recall can serve as a reminder of the importance of food safety.
