London Launches Skyline Skills Hub to Tackle Green Skills Gap

The City of London Corporation has launched the Skyline Skills Hub, a ground-breaking platform designed to address the critical green skills gap in London’s commercial built environment. Announced today, the initiative is part of the City Corporation’s Skills for a Sustainable Skyline Taskforce, aimed at equipping the Square Mile’s workforce with the expertise needed to decarbonise London and meet ambitious Net Zero targets by 2040.

With buildings contributing 76% of London’s emissions and nearly 40% of global greenhouse gas emissions, retrofitting older structures is essential to the decarbonisation agenda. The Skyline Skills Hub offers free resources, including careers guides, case studies, and the Skyline Skills Recommendations Report, to attract, upskill, and reskill professionals in the built environment sector. This initiative is estimated to increase hiring rates by 29% for workers equipped with new green skills.

Keith Bottomley, Chairman of the Skills for a Sustainable Skyline Taskforce, underscored the importance of the project:

“Central London’s skyline is constantly growing, and we must ensure our workforce is equipped with the necessary skills and qualifications to build sustainable structures. The Skyline Skills Hub showcases the best career and training opportunities the built environment sector has to offer.”

The Hub facilitates collaboration between businesses, training providers, and government to fill the urgent need for 26,000 additional skilled workers in Greater London by 2026. The City Corporation’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and workforce development underscores its goal to retain London’s position as a global leader in financial and professional services.

Emma Hoskyn, UK Head of Sustainability at JLL, hailed the Hub as a valuable tool for the sector:

“Today’s launch of the Skyline Skills Hub provides essential guidance for employers, workers, and new entrants. This resource demonstrates the built environment’s value as a sector for launching and growing fulfilling, long-term careers while contributing to a more sustainable future.”

Howard Dawber, Deputy Mayor for Business and Growth, highlighted the initiative’s potential for inclusion and economic growth:

“The green economy is an exciting, growing sector for London. The Skyline Skills Hub will raise awareness of good jobs and training opportunities, ensuring all Londoners can access careers in the built environment sector while businesses gain the expertise needed to thrive.”

The Hub’s resources aim to empower policy makers, industry leaders, and the workforce to close the green skills gap and enable the transformation of London’s commercial properties into sustainable assets. By driving workforce diversity and expertise, the Skyline Skills Hub supports both the decarbonisation of existing buildings and the growth of new sustainable developments.
