Sir Lenny Henry Honoured with Freedom of the City of London

Sir Lenny Henry has been awarded the Freedom of the City of London, recognising his five-decade career in entertainment and his significant charitable work. The ceremony, held at Guildhall, was attended by family and friends, following his nomination by Lord Mayor Alastair King.

Few entertainers have left such a lasting impact on British culture. From his early days on children’s television to becoming one of the country’s most celebrated comedians, actors, and writers, Sir Lenny’s achievements have been as diverse as they are impressive.

His stage performances include Othello at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and London’s West End, The Comedy of Errors at the National Theatre, and Fences at the Duchess Theatre. On-screen, he has starred in Broadchurch, The Long Song, and most recently, The Rings of Power.

Beyond his artistic career, Sir Lenny has played a pivotal role in Comic Relief, the charity he co-founded in 1985. Over the past forty years, the British public has donated an astonishing £1.5 billion to support poverty relief and social justice causes in the UK and around the world.

Reflecting on his honour, Sir Lenny Henry said:

“How cool to be awarded the Freedom of the City of London and to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Giles Terera, Sir Cameron Mackintosh, and Damian Lewis. I am very proud that the Freedom recognises my work on Comic Relief, which has raised £1.5 billion and had a positive impact on so many people’s lives.”

The Freedom of the City of London is one of the UK’s oldest traditions, dating back to 1237. Initially granted to allow recipients to trade freely, it has evolved into an honorary title awarded to those who have made significant contributions to public life.

Lord Mayor of London, Alastair King, praised Sir Lenny’s enduring influence:

“There are few entertainers around today who are as popular and instantly recognisable as Sir Lenny. Throughout his career, he has used his many talents to shine a spotlight on important issues like racial inequality and poverty, helping to change countless lives through Comic Relief. His Freedom is richly deserved.”

This latest honour adds to Sir Lenny’s growing list of accolades, which include a knighthood for services to drama and charity (2015), a Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Television Awards (2022), and a Fellowship of the Royal Television Society (2016).

The impact of Comic Relief and Sir Lenny’s philanthropic work can be seen in countless projects across the UK. To learn more about how Comic Relief continues to support social change, visit the official Comic Relief website.
