José María Velasco: A View of Mexico at the National Gallery

The UK’s first monographic exhibition devoted to José María Velasco (1840–1912) is coming to the National Gallery on 29th March. José María Velasco: A View of Mexico, the first-ever exhibition that the National Gallery has dedicated to one of the most celebrated Latin American artists, coinciding with the 200th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the UK and Mexico.

The exhibition will host over two dozen paintings and drawings, many of them coming from public and private collections in Mexico. 17 of the works are from the Museo Nacional de Arte (MUNAL, Mexico City), the country’s leading public museum.

José María Velasco is known for his monumental paintings of the Valley of Mexico, the area surrounding the capital city. Painted during decades of social change, the work captures the nation’s magnificent scenery and rapid industrialisation.

During his life, his work was shown in Europe and the US but he has never been as well known outside of Mexico. None of his paintings have are in a UK public collection. The last large-scale collection devoted to him outside of Mexico was nearly fifty years ago in Texas in 1976.

Covering over half a century of his career, José María Velasco: A View of Mexico will also touch on concerns regarding the relationship between humanity and the environment, as seen through the lens of a 19th-century painter who saw and addressed ecological changes. These are themes which are still relevant even today.

The exhibition will open on 29th March and go on until 17th August, 2025.
