Indie Band English Teacher Win Mercury Prize for Debut Album

Indie band English Teacher have clinched the coveted Mercury Prize for their debut album “This Could Be Texas,” making them the first act from outside London to win the award since 2014. The Leeds-based quartet, formed while studying at the Leeds Conservatoire in 2020, have captured attention with their unique sound, blending spoken vocals with dreamy guitar lines reminiscent of The Smiths. The band’s success underscores the strong music scene in the north, highlighting the talent flourishing beyond London’s borders.

The Mercury Prize judges praised the album for its originality and character, noting how English Teacher’s fresh approach to the traditional guitar band format set them apart from the competition. On stage, lead singer Lily Fontaine, seemingly overwhelmed by the win, expressed gratitude to her mum, who created the album artwork, and thanked the local venues in Leeds that played a pivotal role in the band’s journey, including Hyde Park Book Club and Brudenell Social Club. The support from these venues, Fontaine noted, has been crucial to the band’s development.

Despite the prestigious recognition, Fontaine and her bandmates appeared stunned, with Fontaine admitting, “We didn’t really plan this far. What do we do now?” The group were among three acts from Leeds shortlisted for the prize, including jungle artist Nia Archives and singer-songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae, reflecting the depth of musical talent emerging from the city.

The album “This Could Be Texas” draws heavily on Fontaine’s upbringing in Colne, East Lancashire, delving into themes of social deprivation, political mismanagement, and personal identity. The Mercury Prize judges commended its “winning lyrical mix of surrealism and social observation,” calling it a “future classic” that reveals new depths on each listen. The album’s standout track, “The Best Tears Of Your Life,” builds to a mesmerising wall of sound, showcasing the band’s innovative approach to storytelling through music.

English Teacher’s win breaks the nine-year streak of London-based winners, bringing attention to the flourishing music scenes outside the capital. Fontaine and guitarist Lewis Whiting highlighted the disparity in opportunities for musicians from other parts of the UK, emphasising the need for greater recognition of northern talent. “Yorkshire has given us some of the most prolific songwriters in British music history,” Fontaine pointed out, celebrating the region’s rich cultural heritage.

The Mercury Prize, awarded to the best British or Irish album of the year, comes with a cash prize of £25,000. This year’s nominees included pop sensation Charli XCX, indie newcomers The Last Dinner Party, and East London rapper Ghetts. The ceremony was held at the iconic Abbey Road Studios and broadcast live on BBC Four and Radio 6 Music, though it was scaled back due to the loss of its sponsor, Freenow. Organisers hope to return the event to its full glory next year.

English Teacher’s victory not only marks a personal triumph for the band but also signals a broader shift in the UK music landscape, acknowledging the diverse and dynamic scenes thriving across the country. As Fontaine noted, “Without the support of the people in that scene, we wouldn’t be here.” This historic win serves as a reminder of the power of community and the enduring influence of regional music hubs.
