The Real Ones World Premiere at Hammersmith’s Bush Theatre This September

Akhtar’s debut show at Hammersmith’s Bush Theatre to star Nathaniel Curtis, Mariam Haque and Anthony Howell in September – from Olivier-winning writer Waleed Akhtar
The Real Ones, set for its World Premiere at Hammersmith’s Bush Theatre, is new play by Olivier Award-winning writer Waleed Akhtar. Running from 6 September to 19 October and Directed by Anthony Simpson-Pike, the production stars Nathaniel Curtis, Mariam Haque, and Anthony Howell, with further casting to be announced.
Akhtar, renowned for The P Word, collaborates again with Simpson-Pike for this exploration of platonic soulmates. The story follows best friends Zaid and Neelam as they navigate diverging paths and unspoken tensions in their lives.
Akhtar highlights the play’s focus on the rarely explored dynamic between a queer man and his straight female best friend, describing friendships as “some of the greatest loves of my life.”

TV Stars in line-up at West London’s Creative Theatre
Nathaniel Curtis, known from Channel 4’s It’s a Sin, plays Zaid. For Curtis, the venue will be a short commute from his home in Pimlico. The actor is a fan of West London life, and recently spoke to the Evening Standard about living in Pimlico and his love of the city’s green spaces, including Wandsworth’s Battersea Park:
“It’s particularly beautiful in autumn, with the leaves falling.”
“(In Pimlico) We’re less than 10 minutes’ walk from the river, which I never take for granted.”
Also in the line-up, Mariam Haque, recently seen at Donmar Warehouse, stars as Neelam. Anthony Howell, from Disney+’s A Thousand Blows, joins the cast as Jeremy.

Hammersmith’s Bush Theatre, known for its diverse programme of boundary-pushing productions, continues its tradition of working with new playwrights. The Real Ones is the latest addition to a celebrated repertoire that is attracting top talent from TV, Film and Theatre to its West London stage.
Performances begin 6th September at Bush Theatre on Uxbridge Road, London. Tickets available here.
