Golden Globes 2025: ‘The Brutalist’ and ‘Emilia Pérez’ Dominate as Hollywood Looks Ahead

The 82nd Golden Globes 2025 delivered a night of surprises and cinematic milestones, with two standout films, The Brutalist and Emilia Pérez, earning top honours. In a year still recovering from the scandal-plagued days of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the revamped Globes sent a clear message: bold and audacious storytelling reigns supreme.

The Brutalist, Brady Corbet’s 215-minute postwar epic, claimed the title of Best Film – Drama, while also securing Best Director for Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody. Corbet, defying sceptics, reflected, “No one was asking for a three-and-half-hour film about a mid-century designer in 70mm. But it works.” Meanwhile, Netflix’s genre-bending Emilia Pérez, directed by Jacques Audiard, won Best Film – Comedy or Musical, along with Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña and Best Non-English Language Film.

Karla Sofía Gascón, Emilia Pérez’s transgender lead, delivered an impassioned speech: “The light always wins over darkness. You can maybe put us in jail, but you can’t take away our identity.”

Major Wins and Memorable Moments

Julianne Moore’s triumphant return in The Substance earned her Best Actress – Comedy or Musical, marking her first Globe win after decades in Hollywood. Another surprise was Fernanda Torres’ win for Best Actress – Drama for her gripping portrayal in I’m Still Here, based on the true story of a family navigating the horrors of political oppression in 1970s Brazil.

Sebastian Stan’s transformative performance in A Different Man also stood out, winning him Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy or Musical. “These films are real and necessary,” said Stan, reflecting on the industry’s reluctance to tackle challenging subjects.

Comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the ceremony, opening with a sharp and humorous monologue that drew applause for its candour. She remarked, “You could really do anything… except tell the country who to vote for.”

Meanwhile, Jon M. Chu’s Wicked collected the Globe for Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement, cementing its status as a major contender for the Oscars. The award underscored Chu’s call for “a radical act of optimism” in art.

The Future of the Golden Globes

The Globes, now owned by Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions, are undergoing a transformation to restore their reputation and relevance. Ratings have rebounded, with CBS committing to a five-year broadcasting deal. However, ongoing legal challenges from former HFPA members loom over the ceremony’s future.
