Tottenham has defeated Manchester United in Spain 1-0 to win the Europa League. This is the club’s first European trophy since the UEFA Cup Winner’s Cup, all the way back in the 1960s, and its first major trophy since 2008.
Ange Postecoglu hasn’t enjoyed the best season at White Hart Lane, with Spurs finishing 17th in the league. Their Europa League final rivals, Manchester United were not much better, finishing 16th in the Premier League.
The game was far from a classic, but that won’t matter to the Tottenham supporters, not least because it’s one more European trophy than Arsenal, and one more trophy of any kind this season than their North London rivals.
Tottenham took the lead in Spain with a scrappy Brennan Johnson strike just before halftime to beat Andre Onana. England’s Luke Shaw was unfortunate enough to get a touch that could’ve made it an own goal for the Red Devils. After that lead, Spurs went on the defensive, holding on to 1-0 for the entire second half. Manchester United had its opportunities but couldn’t beat Vicario and the scoreline would remain. The best chance for United came from Rasmus Højlund who looped a header in the 68th minute, seeing Van de Ven taking off for a spectacular goal-line clearance.
This has been a season of underdogs in English football. Newcastle with the EFL cup has broken its decades long trophy drought, and with its win in the FA Cup against Manchester City, Crystal Palace has won its first ever trophy. And now, with the Europa League, Tottenham has made history and given its fans a night to remember.
