Disused estate garages to become social housing

Disused estate garages are to become social housing under a brand new project to build “much-needed” social housing in Roehampton which has just received the green light. This is part of Wandsworth Council’s efforts to create resident-focused communities. The Aubyn Square Estate scheme will provide 12 new homes, all of which will be social housing within the Homes for Wandsworth programme. The homes will be allocated using a local lettings policy.

Planning permission was granted on Thursday, 18th July, 2024, with the pledge that the homes will all be delivered to Passivhaus standards (an internationally-recognised standard for reducing a building’s carbon footprint and improve wellbeing & comfort for our residents). This will help contribute to the council’s ambitious goal to deliver 1,000 sustainable homes by 2029.

The new homes will replace d disused rages across the Eastwood North estate in Roehampton. As part of the scheme, there will also be a series of landscape improvements including: a useful East-West route for pedestrians, new and enhanced play areas for children, and better biodiversity with new trees and plants introduced.

The scale and character of the new buildings have been developed in response to resident comments received at a series of consultation events held on the estate.

“We are building beautiful high quality council housing across the borough,” Cllr Aydin Dikerdem, Wandsworth Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said. “Working alongside local communities, we are creating homes that people want to live in. It’s really important to us that the existing communities on our estates get to enjoy the benefit of these new schemes. That’s why we’re delighted that alongside these new homes being built, those residents already living on the estate will see positive investment and improvements to the local area.”
