Amazon’s Der Tiger roars onto the big screen in Germany

Amazon’s Der Tiger will debut in German cinemas on 18th September before streaming later this year on Prime Video. For UK audiences, this release is part of a growing trend where streaming platforms are treating international films with the same prestige as major theatrical releases, potentially opening the door for more diverse cinema experiences here.

Set in 1943 on the Eastern Front of World War II, Der Tiger follows the crew of a German Tiger tank sent on a secret mission deep behind enemy lines. As they push further into hostile territory, they confront both external dangers and their own psychological descent, intensified by the use of Wehrmacht-issued methamphetamine. Rather than glorifying combat, the film aims to expose the realities of war, making it a project that stands apart from traditional wartime action films.

The cast includes David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, Leonard Kunz, Sebastian Urzendowsky and Yoran Leicher, with Tilman Strauß and André M. Hennicke in supporting roles. Dennis Gansel, known for Napola and The Wave, directs the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Colin Teevan. Cinematography is by Carlo Jelavic, while Meg Tanner led costume and make-up design.

Philip Pratt, Head of German Originals at Amazon MGM Studios, said: “When Dennis Gansel and producer Frank Kusche presented the concept, we immediately knew we had to make it. This is a story that belongs on the big screen.” CineStar Managing Director Oliver Fock added that the theatrical release would “give audiences the most impactful experience possible.”

This move comes at a time when historical cinema is seeing a resurgence in interest. For viewers keen to explore the historical background of the film, the Imperial War Museums offer extensive resources on the Eastern Front. Meanwhile, those interested in the Tiger tank itself can explore its design and legacy through the Bovington Tank Museum, home to one of the few surviving Tiger tanks in the world.
