“Dangerously parked” e-bikes and e-scooters to be tackled by Wandsworth

From September, Wandsworth will see enforcement officers removing and impounding “dangerously parked” e-scooters and e-bikes that obstruct pavements or roads, at the expense of the operator. This, the council says in a press release, will “ensure safer, more accessible routes for pedestrians.”
Most riders, it said, use them “responsibly and respectfully,” adding that this new enforcement scheme will only tackle the “small number of people who don’t follow the rules.

Since Forest and Lime e-bikes began in the borough, the council says it has removed those left in “unsafe locations” through periodically impounding dangerously parked bikes. It also says it works with operators, encouraging them to “manage their bikes better” and has installed 170 e-bike parking bays. The new scheme will expand on this, trialling a dedicated enforcement team to actively patrol he streets and tackle the issue of badly parked bikes and scooters.
As part of this, officers will work to safeguard pedestrians, using their powers under the Highways Act to remove and impound dangerously parked e-bikes and e-scooters that block access on pavements or roads.
As well as daily patrols, the borough will also respond to reports of dangerously parked bikes and scooters. You can contact hello@wandsworth.gov.uk or call the main helpline, 020 8871 6000.
Impounded bikes and scooters will be taken to a secure depot and the operators will be required to pay a fee to recover them. This, the council says, means it can deliver this scheme “without adding a penny to your Council Tax.”
