Barbican Centre Seeks New CEO as £191m Renewal Takes Shape

The Barbican Centre is preparing for a new chapter, as it launches a search for a Chief Executive Officer to guide the iconic arts venue through its next era of transformation. The internationally acclaimed cultural centre, located in the heart of the City of London, is looking for a dynamic leader to take the reins at a critical moment in its history.

The role opens at a time of major investment. In December 2024, the City of London Corporation approved a £191 million funding package for vital upgrades to the Barbican, covering roughly 80% of the costs for the first five-year phase of the Barbican Renewal Programme. The initiative aims to future-proof the venue’s architecture and infrastructure while enhancing its artistic and visitor experience. A public fundraising campaign will launch later this year to secure the remaining funds.

Chair of the City of London Corporation’s Barbican Centre Board, Sir William Russell, described the CEO position as a

“unique opportunity to influence the future of a remarkable organisation.” He added that the successful candidate would need to be “a visionary and dynamic leader”

with a strong grasp of how the arts contribute to public life.

The appointment comes at a time of broader transformation for the Square Mile. Alongside the Barbican’s renewal, the City Corporation is also progressing with several other landmark projects, including the Salisbury Square Development, which will house a new City of London Police HQ and law courts, and the long-anticipated London Museum at Smithfield, set to become a major cultural destination.

The Barbican’s previous CEO, Claire Spencer, stepped down in July 2024. David Farnsworth, currently Managing Director of City Bridge Foundation, the 900-year-old charity that maintains five Thames bridges, has been serving as interim CEO.

The City of London Corporation remains one of the UK’s largest supporters of the arts and heritage, contributing over £130 million annually to cultural institutions across the capital. These include the Barbican Centre, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the Guildhall Art Gallery, Keats House, and the London Symphony Orchestra, among others.
