Askew Road celebrated by new book

A book that celebrates the past of Askew Road, comparing black-and-white images with modern scenes, has been launched ahead of Christmas. Askew Road: Then & Now, features photos by Harriet Challis and words by historian Joanna Oyediran had its official unveiling at an event in the Askew Gallery.

To mark the occasion, guests invited by the Askew Road association, having a chance to see the one-day rehanging of a 2024 art festival exhibition of some of the photographs. Harriet and Joanna signed copies of the book which explores the areas around Shepherds Bush and reveals how much and how little has changed in 250 years.

Funds raised from the book’s sales will go towards future art festivals on the road. The 78-page book is in a horizontal A4 format to maximise the size of the old photographs, with each set precisely pinned on a map, allowing anyone to work out their locations.

Anecdotes and residents’ memories were included in the text by Joanna who leads walking tours in west London.
