Two more World Cup nations have been added to the expanded travel ban to the USA, set to co-host the competition next year along with Canada and Mexico. Concerns have been raised ahead of the tournament over President Donald Trump imposing bans on fans from competing countries.
In June, the president confirmed that citizens of a dozen nations would be banned from visiting the country and a further seven would face restrictions. The latest two added to the list of countries facing restrictions are Senegal and the Ivory Coast.
The proclamation signed by the president would suspend entry for fans of both World Cup nations, whether as immigrants or not. This covers those travelling on a visitor category for business or tourism, which includes fans travelling for the competition in the summer.
They join fellow competing World Cup nations, Iran and Haiti, who also face travel restrictions for their supporters. Previous executive orders covered athletes, support staff, and immediate relatives of those playing, but not travelling fans.
Senegal has been drawn into what some have dubbed the ‘group of death’ with Mbappe’s France, Haaland’s Norway, and the winner of a play-off between Bolivia, Iraq, or Suriname. The Ivory Coast will face four time champions Germany, Ecuador, and World Cup debutants, Curacao.
