Woman Arrested for Alleged Fraudulent Citizenship Test Scheme

In an unusual and elaborate scheme, a 61-year-old woman from Enfield, north London, has been arrested on suspicion of impersonating at least 14 individuals to take the Life in the UK Test on their behalf. The woman arrested, allegedly employed wigs and disguises to resemble both male and female applicants, and reportedly sought to fraudulently secure them leave to remain in the UK.

Authorities believe the woman travelled to multiple test centres across the country between June 2022 and August 2023, altering her appearance and using falsified identification documents to evade detection. When investigators raided her Enfield home, they uncovered several false documents and a collection of wigs said to have been used in the alleged fraud.

A Home Office spokesperson revealed that impersonators completing citizenship tests on behalf of others could allow individuals to gain the right to remain in the country without undergoing proper checks. Inspector Phillip Parr, from the Home Office’s Immigration Enforcement team, stated that the woman had “orchestrated a premeditated plan to avoid detection, meticulously selecting disguises and test centre locations to evade the authorities.” He also noted that financial gain appeared to be the primary motive behind the alleged activities.

The Life in the UK Test, required for anyone seeking indefinite leave to remain or naturalisation as a British citizen, is a 24-question exam designed to assess applicants’ knowledge of British values, history, and culture. Fraudulent activities like this undermine the integrity of the immigration system, and authorities are committed to addressing such risks.

The woman remains in custody while investigations continue, with officials commending the efforts of the enforcement team to disrupt this alleged scheme.

Authorities have expressed the importance of the Life in the UK Test, a mandatory requirement for those seeking indefinite leave to remain or naturalisation as a British citizen, which evaluates applicants’ knowledge of British values, history, and culture. You can learn more about the test here.
