Overground may soon serve all West London stations.

Plans for the West London Orbital (WLO), a transformative Overground rail line connecting Hendon to Hounslow, are progressing with renewed momentum as 2024 comes to an end. This proposed line, which primarily uses existing tracks, promises to revolutionise travel across West London by improving connectivity and easing congestion.

In December, Mayor of London Sadiq Khan confirmed that the West London Orbital is a priority project, stating that a “feasible solution” for its development has been identified. In a written response to London Assembly member Gareth Roberts, Khan emphasised the importance of securing funding from local sources, national Government, Transport for London (TfL), and the Greater London Authority (GLA) to bring the project to fruition.

A newly released map by Metro has detailed the stations likely to be served by the WLO, further igniting excitement among Londoners. The line will connect key locations like Hendon, Brent Cross, and West Hampstead in the northwest with Hounslow in the west. It will also pass through the upcoming HS2 hub at Old Oak Common, Harlesden, Acton, and potentially include new station developments.

Proposed Stops Along the West London Orbital:

  • Hendon
  • Brent Cross
  • Cricklewood
  • West Hampstead
  • Neasden
  • Harlesden
  • Old Oak Common
  • Acton Central
  • South Acton
  • Lionel Road
  • Kew Bridge
  • Brentford
  • Syon Lane
  • Isleworth
  • Hounslow
  • Clapham Junction

While these plans represent positive moves forward, funding remains a critical hurdle. With TfL’s ambitious expansion plans, tube fares are set to rise in March, contributing to the project’s overall costs. It’s hoped that these additional funds will support long-term infrastructure improvements, including the WLO.

The West London Orbital would not only enhance local transport options but also support economic growth and job creation in the region. As London’s population continues to grow, innovative transport solutions like this are essential for maintaining the city’s status as a global hub.

The proposed West London Orbital route aims to enhance connectivity across the capital, with further details available on the Transport for London website.
