Wales free school meals: Cardiff professor calls healthier options

The introduction of free school meals for all primary school children in Wales has been widely praised, but a leading academic argues that the quality of these meals needs to improve. Professor Kevin Morgan from Cardiff University’s School of Geography has called for healthier, more cost-effective, and environmentally friendly food options to be served in schools.

Prof Morgan noted that while the policy is groundbreaking, it has not yet achieved its full potential. “Wales has won international” praise for implementing free school meals, “but we need to raise the quality of that food,” he said on Radio Wales’ Sunday Supplement. He stressed that providing poor-quality food on a universal basis doesn’t serve the best interests of children.

One of the challenges Wales faces in improving meal quality is the ability to source food locally. According to Prof Morgan, the nation’s horticulture sector is underdeveloped, making it impossible to provide entirely local food to schools. However, he sees this as an opportunity to build the local food supply by using the purchasing power of schools to boost demand.

The Welsh government has acknowledged the importance of improving school meals. A spokesperson said, “We want the best school food offer in the UK to give our children the healthiest start to life.” Over the next year, the government plans to update healthy eating regulations to ensure children are receiving nutritious meals.

As Wales continues to lead the UK in offering free school meals, the push for better quality food reflects a larger effort to create a healthier and more sustainable food system for the future.
