Urgent Appeal for Blood Donors Following Recent Tech Issues

Westfield Shopping Centre is the closest donor point amid an urgent appeal for blood donors in london.

An urgent appeal for blood donors has been issued by the NHS, particularly those with O negative and O positive blood types.

Following a significant drop in donations due to recent cyber issues affecting appointment notifications and triggering a shortage, and amber alert has been triggered, prompting hospitals to conserve O type blood for essential cases and use alternatives when possible.

Hammersmith’s nearest blood donor centre, located on the first floor of Westfield Shopping Mall between The Village and M&S, has numerous vacant slots available. Residents of Hammersmith & Fulham are encouraged to step forward and help replenish these life-saving stocks.

Potential donors can register online at the Give Blood website or call 0300 123 23 23 to book an appointment.

Particular Need for O Group Blood Donors

Jo Farrar, a representative from the NHS Blood and Transplant service, emphasised the urgency of the situation: “We urgently need more O group donors to come forward and boost stocks – the need is critical.”

The O negative blood type, known as the universal donor, is vital for emergency transfusions when a patient’s blood type is unknown. Despite making up only 8% of the population, O negative blood accounts for 16% of hospital orders.

O positive blood is also in high demand, and those with this blood type are encouraged to donate if they can.

The White City blood donor centre stands out as one of the few in the country where younger donors (aged 17 to 44) outnumber their older counterparts. This demographic is crucial, as three blood donations are required every minute in hospitals to manage emergencies, childbirth, and routine treatments. Given that blood has a shelf life of only 35 days, continuous donations are essential.

The NHS is urging eligible donors to come forward immediately to help address this critical shortage and ensure that hospitals can continue to provide the necessary care for patients in need.
