Uber Eats Offers Free Iftar Meals to Muslim Couriers During Ramadan

As Ramadan begins, Uber Eats has reintroduced its ‘Sundown Spots’ initiative, providing free iftar meals for Muslim couriers who are fasting while working long shifts. The programme, first launched in 2023, will operate across several UK cities, including London, where selected restaurants are offering meals to drivers at the end of their fast.

Several well-known London eateries are participating, including Lahore Karahi in Tooting, Smacks in Thornton Heath, Turkuoise in Bethnal Green, and Chicago Grill. The initiative is designed to make it easier for couriers observing Ramadan to access food while on shift, ensuring they can break their fast with a proper meal.

For Muslims, iftar, the evening meal that breaks the daily fast, is an important part of Ramadan. However, couriers often find it difficult to arrange meals while working, particularly in a city as busy as London. By partnering with restaurants, Uber Eats is offering a practical solution, providing a free takeaway meal for couriers who need it.

The first Sundown Spot will launch in London on Thursday, 20th March, before expanding to other cities, including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leicester, Nottingham, Manchester, Birmingham, and Bradford. In addition to free meals, Uber Eats is highlighting independent restaurants that serve suhoor, the pre-dawn meal before fasting begins, so that Muslim customers can more easily find places open late at night.

How the Initiative Works

Participating restaurants will be clearly marked on the Uber Eats app, allowing couriers to find locations where they can collect their meal. Restaurants serving suhoor will also be highlighted with special tags, making it easier for customers to locate suitable options.

The initiative is also helping smaller restaurants gain more exposure, encouraging more customers to explore independent businesses that specialise in iftar and suhoor meals. This provides additional support for restaurant owners at a time when food is in high demand.

How to Find a Sundown Spot Near You

Couriers who want to take advantage of the scheme can check the Uber Eats app for participating restaurants. Those dining out can also look for signs outside selected restaurants that indicate their involvement. Customers using Uber Eats can also benefit from Ramadan-specific promotions and discounts throughout the holy month.
