U.S. Imposes 25% Tariffs on Canada and Mexico, Reigniting Trade Tensions

U.S. imposes a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, escalating trade tensions with two of its largest partners. The move, effective from 4th March, 2025, has drawn sharp criticism from both Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who argue that the measures undermine the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

The tariffs apply to a wide range of goods, including televisions, air conditioners, avocados, beef, and potash, a key ingredient in fertilisers. However, some last-minute exemptions were introduced, sparing carmakers from the initial wave of levies after concerns were raised by businesses and financial markets. Despite this, about 50% of U.S. imports from Mexico and 62% from Canada may still be subject to tariffs, adding uncertainty for manufacturers and consumers.

In response, Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on $30 billion worth of U.S. products, with plans to expand the measures in the coming weeks. Mexico is expected to announce its countermeasures on 9th March. The uncertainty surrounding these trade restrictions has already impacted financial markets, with the S&P 500 falling nearly 1.8% and investors bracing for potential supply chain disruptions.

Economists warn that prolonged tariff disputes could drive up prices for consumers while disrupting trade flows that have long benefited businesses on both sides of the border. However, the Office of the United States Trade Representative has defended the measures, stating that they are essential to maintaining fair competition and reinforcing America’s economic position (USTR – United States Trade Representative).

For businesses that rely on cross-border trade, these developments present new challenges. Many companies are now assessing whether to adjust their supply chains or seek tariff exemptions under USMCA rules.
