Tusk says Poland may seek its own nuclear weapons
Poland may look to acquire its own nuclear weapons, Prime Minster Donald Tusk has said, adding that the country “takes nuclear security very seriously.” The comments come after Europe strengthens its nuclear deterrence following concerns over the United States and whether its commitments to defending the continent can still be expected.
Tusk made the remarks ahead of a weekly government meeting, emphasising that nuclear security is a top priority and that the country is looking to strengthen its defence and security.
“As our autonomous capabilities grow, we will strive to prepare Poland for the most autonomous action possible on this issue in the future,” he said.
The statements from Tusk reflect a wider climate in Europe as countries work to stiffen their own deterrence and increase their ability to guarantee their own security amid rising doubts following the re-election of Donald Trump. The debate over America’s role in European defences has become more urgent, forcing some countries to consider greater autonomy in their security.
The Prime Minster did not give any specific timeline or any details about the steps that Warsaw will take to that end, with the comments only pointing out the country’s intention for more autonomy and to be more prepared for various national security situations.
